Gov. Inslee - Ban Oil Trains Now!

banoiltrainsnow.jpgThe derailment, fire, and oil spill in Mosier, OR--just across the Columbia Gorge from WA--proved once again that trains carrying Bakken oil cannot be made safe--not for communities, not for ecosystems, and not for the climate.

If the winds that day had been what they were the day before, that medium-sized disaster would have been an utter catastrophe.

We greatly appreciate that you said today that you're "not interested in symbolic measures", and that you've asked for a moratorium on tracks that meet only the weak standards UP used in Mosier. Will you stand up to oil companies, BNSF, and regulators who refuse to act, and go further to safeguard WA communities? Please institute a moratorium on all Bakken oil trains immediately, urge Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx to permanently ban the shipment of Bakken crude by rail, and reject all proposals for new fossil fuel infrastructure. Washington State needs to find another way.

Even your own Department of Natural Resources agrees: these trains are no good. We can't pretend to lead on climate change if we're acting as the fossil fuel depot for the world.

No governor deserves to be called “green” if they speak with hollow words and can’t find the motivation to do the hard things, or even the things they say they will do!

Oil trains are very dangerous. This past Saturday (July 9) I attended a gathering at the Skagit River Bridge in Burlington and learned that this bridge was built 100 years ago for train traffic and weight in THOSE days….NOT for 100-car trains full of oil, the heaviest trains out there, according to one of the train officials that spoke to us Saturday. The bridge piers there have already collapsed twice and been repaired, the last time 20 years ago, NOT due to an oil train—-so what happens when you put heavy OIL trains on it?! Shell and Tesoro (one or the other, maybe both?) are hoping to start sending SIX 100-car oil trains per WEEK across this bridge starting sometime this Fall (Oct.-Nov.-Dec.??), unless ‘we’, the public (and YOU, our Governor), can stop this from happening. Couple a potential oil spill there with another fact I learned Saturday—-namely, that the Skagit River contains 50% (that’s HALF) of the salmon run in the entire Pacific Northwest—-and any oil spill-train wreck or bridge fiasco there would be absolutely devastating, not only to the salmon, but also to the entire economy of Burlington and surrounding communities. We’ve already had one ‘blow out’ at Moshier, Oregon. Even the train people, who are presently using sub-standard train equipment, admit that ‘occasionally’ a train fiasco is going to happen and when you think about it, according to the law of averages, they HAVE to from time to time. No matter how safe we make automobiles, ‘accidents’ WILL always occur…a fact of life. Same with trains…except when an OIL train accident happens, the devastation is unbelievable, especially if it’s at a body of water such as (recently) the Columbia River or the Skagit River or any other ‘water’ body, because then we wipe out Mother Nature and the wildlife as well. So with all this in mind, Governor Inslee, I’m strongly urging you to PERMANENTLY BAN future shipments of Bakken crude oil—-or any ‘other’ oil—-by rail here in Washington State! And for that matter, use your influence to get oil-by-rail shipments banned elsewhere as well! And thank you so much for your time and energies in this matter—-you’re the best!
